Wave Energy Conversion Buoy Installation and Maintenance

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. (OPT) developed a proprietary design for a method of generating electrical power from ocean waves. The Office of Naval Research funded the installation of three OPT power buoys and a 3-inch diameter, 3,500 foot long electrical cable connecting the buoy site to the onshore power grid. The site is located in open ocean waters off the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe, Oahu. Sea Engineering initially assisted OPT with site surveys for power buoy placement and cable routing. Sea Engineering has subsequently been responsible for the installation of the electrical cable and all three buoys. The work has required extensive underwater operations including installation of anchor bases, rock bolt anchors, underwater welding and cutting, flange make-ups, and numerous other diving operations required to meet the unique demands of this project.
