Waialua Bridge Emergency Scour and Stabilization Repairs

Waialua Bridge, at Waialua Beach Road Ki’iki’i Stream Crossing, experienced significant scour and structural damage during a significant flood event on Oahu’s North Shore.  After a emergency inspection, timber piles were found to be significantly damaged and severe scour was discovered, resulting in the closure of the bridge, which was 1 of 2 through-fares for the town of Waialua.

Sea Engineering was contracted to make emergency repairs to allow the bridge to be re-opened as quickly as possible.  SEI’s work included, excavation of the west abutment to relocate structurally sound timber piles, installation of a stainless steel rebar cage to engage the abutment and structurally sound timber piles, formwork and cast-in place concrete on the abutment.  Once complete, SEI installed rip rap varying from 22″ to 34″ in diameter on the scour critical areas to allow the bridge to be safely re-opened.  SEI mobilized diving equipment, landside construction support equipment, SEI’s RT760 Grove crane and fabricated a customized rip rap barge to receive and install the rip rap underneath the limited bridge clearances.
