Haleiwa, Punaluu, and Hauula Beach Park

In 2007, the City and County of Honolulu initiated a program to address erosion problems at City and County beach parks on Oahu. An initial scoping phase conducted by Sea Engineering, Inc. documented and prioritized problems at all of the 79 beach parks on the island.

Sea Engineering, Inc. was then contracted to develop concept designs to address the priority problems at 3 of the parks with high erosion hazards: Haleiwa, Punaluu, and Hauula Beach Park. The key design objectives were to protect the park facilities and improve the recreational beach. The work included:

  1. Detailed field investigations at each beach park to determine shoreline and oceanographic conditions, and coastal processes
  2. Reconnaissance level offshore sand source investigations and jet probing
  3. Analysis of shoreline erosion history and trends
  4. Determination of oceanographic design parameters, including wave height and water level
  5. Structural assessments of the failing seawalls at Hauula and Haleiwa Beach Park
  6. Development of concept designs for preferred alternatives, including plan and profile layouts
  7. Preparation of a comprehensive basis of design report
