Concord Military Ocean Terminal Underwater Inspection

Sea Engineering was selected to participate in a joint above water and underwater inspection effort with KCI Technologies, Inc. and Pennoni Associates, Inc.  The inspection included approximately 3,000 timber piles at the Military Ocean Terminal Concord, formerly Concord Naval Weapons Station, for the US Army Corps of Engineers.  Sea Engineering provided a Professional Engineer Diver, a 25-foot dive boat – the MV Recovery, and underwater hydraulic tools for the inspection.

The joint team field investigation included:

  • Level III resistance drilling, sample removal, and destructive testing of 150 pre-selected timber piles supporting Pier 3
  • Level I and II inspection of approximately 3,000 timber piles
  • 15 full diameter pile sections cut from Pier 2
    • Analysis of material properties associated with different levels of marine borer damage

Material condition assessment was performed on timber samples on-site at the Military Ocean Terminal Concord facility and at an offsite laboratory by Wood Advisory Services of Millbrook, New York.  Data collected from this inspection was used by members of the joint team for:

  1. Engineering structural analysis calculations
  2. Three-dimensional structure modeling of the Pier 3 timber pier structure
  3. Preparation of a detailed inspection and condition assessment report with recommendations for further actions
