Fort Kamehameha Ocean Outfall
Customer: U.S. Navy
Start Year: 1999
City/Town: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, United States
Sea Engineering provided subconsultant services to SSFM Engineers, Inc, the designers of a major wastewater outfall constructed off Pearl Harbor for the U.S. Navy. Initial responsibilities included the evaluation of various outfall lengths, diffuser depths, potential routes, and preliminary initial dilution and far-field plume modeling to determine comparative Zones of Mixing for various discharge depths. Extensive subsequent work to support the outfall design included marine geophysical surveys, underwater coring operations, measurement of currents and density, near and far field plume modeling, and calculation of design wave conditions.
During the construction, Sea Engineering provided all diving services to the marine contractor. The new outfall is 13,000 feet long and extended from the shoreline to the 150 foot water depth. Diving tasks included flang make-ups, tremie concrete pours, pipe and protective rock placement, and installation of articulated block mats.
