SHORE END LANDINGS

Sea Engineering, Inc. has provided the diving and small boat support for cable landings in Hawai`i since the mid 1980’s. The work has included project coordination, boat and diver support during the landings, as built surveys, and installation of split pipe protection subsequent to the landings. Two of the projects involved multiple landings throughout the Hawaiian islands, on a very tight schedule. Landings have been completed in a variety of sea conditions, including the large winter waves for which Hawai`i is famous. We have developed the application of jet skis during severe wave conditions, to facilitate the transport of divers into and through the surf zone. For information on Cable Route Surveys, please see our Hydrographic and Geophysical page.  Below are descriptions of some typical projects at SEI:

Representative Projects

HITS Project (1998)

Completed for Bell Atlantic, AT&T, and the U.S. Navy. The project consisted of the installation of two fiber optic cables beneath Pearl Harbor and four associated landings. SEI was responsible for the preliminary reconnaissance of the landing sites, cable towing and patrol boat support, and anchoring of the cables in place.

Shore Landings for GST/Pacific Telecom Interisland Fiber Optic Cable System (1997)

SEI provided diving and small boat services for 10 cable landings on the main Hawaiian islands. The landings were completed over a 30 day period in a variety of weather and wave conditions. Additional work included route reconnaissance of each site prior to the landing, a detailed bathymetric survey of the route, inspection and videotaping of the final cable alignment, and installation of several thousand feet of split pipe armor protector.

TPC-3 and 5 Cable landings (1995)

SEI provided small boat and diver support during four cable landings at Yokohama Beach, O`ahu. The work included as built surveys and installation of split pipe protection.

Shore Landings for the GTE/ Hawaiian Tel Interisland Fiber Optic Cable System (1994)

SEI provided all diver and small boat support for the shore end landings during the installation of the first interisland fiber optic cable. Six landings were made on four islands over a two week period: Sandy Beach and Kahe Point, O`ahu; Mokapu Beach, Maui; Spencer Beach Park, Hawai`i; and at Wailua, Kaua`i. Subsequent work involved installation of protective split pipe casing on the near-shore portions of the cables at Kahe Point and Sandy Beach.

Shore Landings for HAW-5 and PACRIM East Fiber Optic Cables, Yokohama Beach, O`ahu, Hawai`i (1994)

SEI provided diving services during the shore end landings for the fiber optic cables, and for subsequent installation of approximately 700 feet of split pipe protection on each of the two cables. The work included route reconnaissance of the site prior to the landing, and videotaping of the final cable alignment

HAW-5 and PACRIM-EAST Cable Landings (1992)

SEI provided small boat and diver support for two cable landings at Yokohama Beach, O`ahu. The work included a pre-landing reconnaissance to select the optimum route, all marine support during the landings, and the installation of split pipe protection.
